A Blind Date and Clos Dominic Vinyes Baixes 2004

As wine bloggers, we are dependent on the web to give us vital nutrition that comes in the form of both community and information. This can be seen as both a positive and negative. The positive is that we are able to meet people from around the world who share our passions, vision and dreams. They love wine with the same intensity as we love wine, craving to share this emotion with anyone who’s willing to listen. The negative is that we rarely have the opportunity to actually meet these people face to face. We Twitter back and forth about a new vintage, leave comments on each other’s site, or discuss in one forum or another ways in which we can change the wine world together, but rarely, do we physically share space.

So last Friday afternoon, we scheduled a “blind date” if you will, with three people for whom we’ve been bantering back and forth with for quite some time. At least this is true with Joan Gomez Pallaras of De Vinus, a popular Spanish wine blog. I can’t tell you how many plans have been made and broken in hopes of sharing a glass of wine with this Barcelona wine guru. Seriously, considering that the Joan lives not 20 minutes away from us, we should have done this ages ago, but life got the best of us, and it took over 6 months for us to finally get our acts together.

As for Eduardo and Edgar of Vinus TV, an Internet wine show, they had flown in from Madrid to not only meet us, but a handful of other bloggers as well. Therefore, our meeting was actually quite prompt considering that we’ve only be in contact for a short while.

This said, our “blind date” went phenomenally well, as we shared stories about blogging, culture, the European Wine Blogging Conference, and ways in which Spanish wineries need to get off their keisters to market themselves better. Not really a news flash that we all felt the same way in the lack of effective marketing here in Iberia, but it was great fun to actually share this experience together, in human form. Plus, the energy between us was filled with wit and humor, which always make an afternoon both memorable and unfortunately, too quick!

Granted the delicious cured hams, cheeses, olives and fresh baked bread lathered in tomato doesn’t help slow down the hands of time either. Located in the dark recesses of the Born, Vila Viniteca is a must see for anyone who loves food and wine. And speaking of wine, our bottle of Clos Dominic Vinyes Baixes 2004 paired beautifully with our Tapas and blind date adventure.

Sourced from vineyards in the Priorat, this wine is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Picapoll Negre with old-vine Carigñena and Garnacha. ‘Baixa’, meaning ‘below’ in Catalan, the grapes are taken from a vineyard at the base of the steep Vinyes Altes property. And although this particular vineyard is rather young in comparison to their other 100+ year old vines, these particular plantings are grown in the slate rock, which keep yields low and varietal character intense. Dark and brooding with expressive aromas of cedar, mineral, black cherry, blueberry and leather. Big, round and lush in the mouth with fine tannins and long dark fruit finish, I would highly suggest seeking out this wine, as it is in perfect form. And the best reason of all to seek this out, Clos Dominic has a blog ;-)
