Pharrell Williams – Happy – We Are from Porto

It would be hard to escape the trendy, upbeat sounds of “Happy”, a song performed by American singer Pharrell Williams, from the Despicable Me 2 album. It’s been so successful that it’s topped the charts in 16 different countries and sold one million copies in the UK alone. Impressed? Just wait, there’s more! To coincide with the song’s release, the website 24hoursofhappy.com was launched marketed as “the world’s first 24 hour music video”, featuring a host of cameos including Jamie Foxx, Steve Carell and Magic Johnson. In typical social media fashion, the original music video eventually spawned covers on YouTube in which people from various cities around the world dance to the song. These videos are generally called, “Pharrell Williams – Happy – […]

Simplesmente Vinho: Celebrating natural wine in Portugal

Last year, Catavino attended the premiere of Simplesmente Vinho and had a fantastic time. We were surprised by the off-the-cuff tasting that resulted in a group of “wine geeks” joining together in a cave, literally, on the Cais de Ribeira for a small producer tasting. Thankfully, it was a huge success and has returned for round two! As for us, we’ve decided to bring in a natural wine aficionado, Simon Woolf of The MorningClaret, Tim Atkin and Decanter, who has passionately taken on the challenge to dive into the lesser known side of Portuguese wines. In preparation, we’ve put together a short interview with cofounder, João Roseira. Enjoy and if you are near Porto please come on down! It promises […]

Catavino’s Storytelling Night: February 19, 2014!

Not a few weeks ago, Catavino celebrated its very first Storytelling night, live at Taberna do Largo in Porto. The evening was an enormous success! So much so that we’re back with a 2nd edition on February 19th based on the theme “A Moment of Pride: Personal successes told from the trenches”. Our theme explores that one moment in time when you felt on top of the world, proud of you who are and of what you’ve accomplished. This is a moment to cast away your inhibitions and fears and simply dive into your ego. Maybe you saved a puppy from drowning? Sharpened your pencils? Carried a man out of burning house? Flossed for a week straight? Ran a marathon? […]

Happy Holidays from Catavino!

Happy Holidays from Minnesota!! Here in the frigid tundra, the Opaz clan is gathered around the fireplace enjoying a warm and intimate holiday among family. Freshly made maple twist coffee cake, steaming hot coffee and Port wine are savored among a heap of presents as snow delicately makes its way to the frozen ground. It’s one of the few times of the year that you feel that rare cozy feeling, unique to cold weather and a warm hearth, a time to reflect on how fortunate you are to have people you love close by. It’s on this day, with our newborn son cuddled next to us, that we want to thank all of you for making our Christmas so fantastic. […]

Spanish Wine gets Real in London

“In the end we will conserve only what we love. Love only what we understand. Understand only what we are taught.” – Baba Dioum The line of Spanish wine tables stood proudly in the centre of the room. The combined annual production of these 15 wineries wouldn’t keep the smallest Madrid tapas bar in wine for a month, yet here they were representing their country at The Real Wine Fair in faraway London. Why? Because it seems that despite the British obsession with discounts, despite our cynicism for the term ‘Natural Wines‘, and despite the competition from all over the world, Britain is still a haven for wine mavericks. These wineries are here fighting for their survival in large part […]

Trashumancia: Celebrating Humanity through Woolly Sheep

Editor’s Note: In a fast pace world filled with sleek technology, John Perry highlights a Spanish festival dedicated to the bleating creatures that have provided us food and livelihood for centuries. Those familiar with Spain have undoubtedly heard of the encierros (running of the bulls) in Pamplona, but there are other events where Spaniards also celebrate animals invading their everyday urban space. One of them is the Fiesta de la Trashumancia, when traffic is completely cut to allow herds of livestock –mainly sheep- to parade through Madrid’s most bustling and upscale areas. Imagine London’s Piccadilly Circus full of sheep instead of cars and pedestrians! Celebrated once a year –generally in early autumn- this bleating procession through the city began as a […]

GSMA Mobile World Conference: Tech Tips on How to Eat and Drink Well in Barcelona

Next week, Barcelona will be inundated with a digital waterfall of techies attending the largest mobile conference in the world. The GSMA Mobile World Conference attracts some 60,000 mobile players including mobile phone and tablet manufacturers, telecom operators, trade associations, service providers, app developers and amateurs developers who are keen to discover the next “must have” device for 2013. The #MWC13 is no small event, but despite the deluge of new tech prognostications hitting the interwebs, we’re rather skeptical that our tech friends will take the time to look up from their mobile units to ensure a delicious meal. That’s where we come in. Being that Catavino prides itself on its latest gadgetry, in hopes of taking that next 1 million […]

Fantastic Tapas Event in London for Rioja Lovers

It is a very clever name, if you think about it. Tapas Fantasticas. Not Rioja Fantastica, or a mundane “Spanish Wine Festival” that would appeal only to the converts. The objective is to enthuse regular wine consumers who love drinking wine but don’t consider themselves wine experts, to explore the wines of Rioja. These people are looking for tasty experiences and treats – and “tapas culture” has come to be recognised for exactly that. So what could be more appealing than fantastic tapas and wine? The fourth edition of Tapas Fantasticas took place on July 14-15 2012, in the heart of London and in the shadow of Tower Bridge and its new Olympic ‘bling’. As in previous years, Wines from […]
