Here at Catavino, and the money making arm of our company, Catavino Marketing, we spend the majority of our time showing wineries how change can alter their current conditions. For example, simply by talking to consumers online, they can sell more wine, rather than ignoring them and expecting their retailers and importers to do the work. Or just by setting up a twitter account, they might build greater loyalty within their customer base. The key is to think differently, trying something new that might not be comfortable. But in order to achieve this goal, you must throwÂ aside your pride and admit that your ideas are not the only ones that matter.
This past week, I failed to listen to my own advice. Two great friends played our role for an evening, pushing for growth and change; and upon reflection, I realized that I had turned into the customer that I’d rather not work with. Rather than admitting they could be right, I fought to hold onto what I believed in, and for this, I am sorry. They know who they are, and they both deserve this apology.
In the wine world, where tradition is held tightly as our calling card to selling our products, we often fail to realize that throughout history, these traditions sometimes handicap us from doing better. What you believe today maybe valid, but there are also other ways to do things. At the very least, these new ways are worth considering.
Catavino is going to begin testing new ideas, thanks to two very good friends, and this is just the first step.
