It doesn’t take much to stop your world for a moment, to clear your mind and recognize the millions of things you’re grateful for. Maybe it’s the sweet smell of the fat spruce propped proudly in your living room. Covered in small, brightly colored lights that may, or may not, always work; it makes the house feel cozy, warm and inviting. Maybe it’s the ginormous roast beef that’s slow roasting in the oven, giving off mouthwatering aromas of rosemary, olive oil and pure heaven. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the glittering crystal scattered across the dining room table beckoning to be filled with copious amounts of wine – the more dysfunctional the gathering, the more bottles of wine.
In our case, this is the time of the year to physically see family, and teach our son that humans actually exist beyond the virtual world of Skype. As our combined families include members from India, Ghana, Republic of Congo, Australia, Norway, Belize, and the Philippines – or have people living in Hong Kong, Portugal, and the farthest reaches of the USA – it’s a rare occasion to get everyone under the same roof. Add a handful of multi-national babies, and suddenly, new languages are introduced, new foods, customs and traditions. It’s the ultimate family mashup!
This Holiday Season, we invite you to add some international flare to your festivities. Do something different! Why not pair your meal with a variety of fortified wines such as Sherry, Port or sweet Moscatel? You could make the traditional Spanish Polvorones and Portuguese Sweet Pumpkin Dessert; or simply enjoy the holidays while popping 12 delicious grapes into your mouth at the strike of midnight on New Year’s Eve.
However you decide to make this time special, know that all of us at Catavino wish you and yours a warm, loving Holiday Season!
