The etymology of Mas Perinet comes from the surnames of its founders, who are of French origin.

600 ha. began the long and dramatic history of Mas Perinet, when the land was not only occupied by vines, but also almond, hazelnut and olive trees. Later, the grapes were used for bulk, before the onset of phylloxera. It wasn´t until the 1950´s when the winery was revitalized with the cultivation of hazelnuts, considered a very lucrative crop at the time. In 1995, 3 engineers bought the land and converted back to vines that Mas Perinet reclaimed its original stature as a winery.

Wines produced: Gotia, Clos Maria

Website: http://www.portaldelpriorat.com/

Like a delapitated house, slowly crumbling to its ruin, since 2001, Architect Alfredo Arribes has restored the terraced lands called, closters, of the Priorat near El Molar, Bellmunt and el Lloar into their original beauty. And as a result of the succes of his Priorat winery, Clos de Priorat, or maybe out of a deepseeded desire to challenge his creativity, in 2003 Alfredo began Portal del Montsant with his partner Ricardo Rufes.

Nestled inside the old Marca Cooperative building, from the outside, one could easily pass by the structure and assume it’s abandoned, potentially one of the many victims to the recent economic downturn. But walk inside and it feel like a converted NYC warehouse, complete with a sleek and minimalist IKEA like design. Even the winery itself is practical and simple, a ready-to-assemble metal structure literally constructed in the center of the old cooperative surrounded by a minon of ancient cement tanks. ”Rather than revamp the entire winery, it seemed more appropriate to simply add what we needed in the extra space provided,” added Alfredo.

But his the ingenuity didn’t end there. In the very heart of the winery, deep in the recesses of the building, they’ve cut into the old presses to create small barrel aging rooms each devoted to a particular parcel of land. We tasted approximately 1/2 dozen barrel samples that afternoon, all from the same vintage, but differing in their location and soil type: clay, sand or chalk. “I don’t think you can make a good wine from only one area, because what most people don’t understand is that Montsant is a palatte of landscapes, and when blended together, they create the spirit of Montsant.”

Unlike Priorat, whose diversity is dependent on the climate, Montsant not only has climatic variations, but also profound soil and altitude variations as well. “Find me another place in Spain where you can find high levels of alcohol with an equally bright and fresh acidity?”

Wines are made from Samso, Garnatxa, Syrah, Garnatxa Blanc and Chardonnay.

Wines Produced: Santbru Carinyenes Velles, Santbru Blanc, Brunus Blend, Brunus Rosé

In much the same way that you cannot judge a book by its cover, or an individual at first glance, you equally cannot judge a winery by its aesthetics. Celler Cooperatiu Cornudella is an old, dust covered winery that could easily stage a medieval horror film. Built in 1919, by the acclaimed Catalan architect, Cesar Martinell i Brunet, the structure gives off an air of grandeur, with it’s vaulted arched hallways, and hidden secret passageways. But time has eaten away at its spirit, leaving a wasted building much in the need of a little tender loving care.

But like the famed Lopez de Heredia winery, covered in a thick layer of history, Celler Cooperatiu Cornudella has retained its ability to handcraft some incredible wines. More specifically, we’re referring to their fortified wines, as well as their Mistella.

These types of wines are generally overlooked, and assumed inferior to a quality red, white or rosado wine. But to dismiss these wines only diminishes and limits our understanding of the breadth and diversity of Montsant wines. This winery produces fortified and dessert wines of character, unique onto themselves and worthy of exploration.

Tourism: Like many wineries in the region, they will happily give you a tour and tasting if you contact them beforehand.

Wines Produced: Castell de Siurana Seleccio de Costers, Les Troies, El Codolar-Blanc, El Codolar-Tinto, El Codolar-Rosat, Mistella, Ranci, Sweet Garnatxa

Tall, casual and friendly, owner Jose Maria Vendrell Rived is a site to behold among his 12 hectar estate, Finca L’Alleu. Having previously worked at Álvaro Palacios, Celler Coop. and Capçanes, he took over his grandfather’s estate and is now producing 15-20,000 bottles a year of which half is exported to the USA. And although his oldest vines reach well over 80 years old, Jose Maria’s philosophy is to continually seek out a new and undiscovered expression in his wines using native varieties such as Garnatxa Negre and Samso, “I want to retain my heritage but craft something completely different”.

Aging takes place in French oak barrels, kept for up to 4-5 years.

Wines Produced: L’Alleu, Serè
