Founded in 1887 by Don Rafael Lopez de Heredia y Landeta, who at the age of 20, garnered his passion for adventure and keen business sense to make a leap from chocolate into wine. Now, considered the third oldest winery in Rioja, Lopez de Heredia is well into the fourth generation and continuing to make wines in the traditional style under the helm of Mercedes Lopez de Heredia and managed by the spunk and zeal of Maria-Jose Lopez de Heredia. Keeping with the time honored tradition of planting only Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and Manzuelo for reds and Viura and Malvasia for whites on 170 hectares of land, much of their wine can be found in just about every corner of the world.
