This is one winery I truly wished we had visited during our trip through Rioja. According to John Radford’s book on Rioja, this is one of the few family owned wineries that has taken a personal interest in lowering their carbon footprint. Not only did they construct their winery in 1994 out of renewable sources, but they have also been active in finding new and ingenious ways to minimize waste, including recycling and repurifying their water used in their cooling tanks. Grapes are harvested from 40 family owned hectares of clayey-ferrous soils in and around Cenicero and aged in 243 French and American oak barrels.

Bodegas Fernando Remírez de Ganuza is perfectly, disguised in a small, sandstone pueblo called Sanmiego. With its sandstone walls, and modest wooden front door, it could easily pass as a quaint little home. But Fernando is far from conservative. In 1989, he slowly acquired the finest parcels of land as they came to market, whereby forming the solid foundation ones needs to make first rate wine. His goal was simple: to make the best wine in Rioja – a grand statement that one should not take lightly.

Now here’s where his passion to achieve this goal becomes more evident. Most people would: buy a bunch of equipment, hire a young enologist, buy second hand grapes and design a fancy label. Not Fernando. In his case, it went more like this:

  1. Either find the best vineyards with the best vines available or wait until they became available.
  2. Redesign all the winemaking equipment, so as to improve and innovate what already existed. Each tank, press and barrel is designed to his very own specifications.
  3. Cut no corners when it comes to harvesting by picking the grapes as each bunch comes to full maturity.
  4. Select incredible grapes – only the best for his premium blend. Going so far as to only use just the shoulders of the bunch. (Basically looking at the bunch as a triangle, he only selects the top half where the grapes are most concentrated for his premium blend.)
  5. Rotate his oak fermentation vessels every two years for new ones.
  6. Use his barrels only once for aging.
  7. Oh and the fancy label!

Currently, Fernando owns over 53 hectares of land and 850+ barrels. To continue reading about Ryan’s tour of Bodegas Fernando Remírez de Ganuza, click here.

  • 2004 Fernando Remírez de Ganuza Rioja Trasnocho – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja (4/9/2008)
Dark in color with rich, concentrated aromas of raw steak, blueberries and a lovely floral component right near the end. Silky, fine tannins, round in the mouth and a lovely bright acidity. Festive flavors linger on my palate of blue and black berries, coffee and anise seed. 4/5

  • 2004 Fernando Remírez de Ganuza Rioja Trasnocho – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja (4/9/2008)
Inky wine with dark dark color. Oak is very apparent with vanilla being predominant. Dark fruit that is almost hidden behind the body. Fine but very big tannins, and an acidity to match. Minerals begin to come out in the nose as it opens. Rich flavors of red fruit. Big spice too, though not as apparent, needs about ten years in bottles. 4/5

Dark in color with a pleasant blackcherry bouquet, highlighted with green herbs, dark earth, spices and black licorice. In the mouth, the wine is well integrated with silky tannins, medium acidity and a nice, medium long dark berry finish. Subtle flavors of chocolate and cinnamon round off the palate nicely.4/5

  • 2002 Fernando Remírez de Ganuza Rioja Fincas de Ganuza – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja (4/9/2008)
Nice pure cherry fruit a bit like craisin – Nice liquorice and cinnamon hints. Good overall med mouthfeel with a fine tannin structure. Acidity is strong and this calls for roast chicken. Pure cherry and some light spice. 3.5/5

85% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, and 5% others, aged for 2.5-3 years in American oak and 1 years in bottle before released. Dark purple in color, dense and grapey. The bouquet literally draws you into the glass, enticing you to take deep, full breathes of ripe blueberries, freshly melted chocolate and black licorice. In the mouth, the wine is vibrant and alive with silky, fine and medium firm tannins that easy their way off your tongue, leaving a luscious dark spice, coffee bitter chocolate finish. Great wine! 4.5/5

  • 2000 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Gran Reserva – Spain, La Rioja, Rioja (3/3/2008)
Great wine here with a nose that right off draws me in for more. Cinnamon, and spices combine with mint, leather and a raspberry chocolate note. Soft in the mouth with an amazing acidity for a wine that is 8yrs old. Long persistent finish where the palette for the most part mirrors the nose. 4.5/5

Subtle mineral and spice notes dusting a rich blanket of black cherries, black raspberries and bitter chocolate. Nice mouthfeel with good acidity and well integrated fruit and wood. • 2003 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja (3/3/2008)
Deep red inky cherry color to this wine. The nose is wonderful with graphite and cherry notes the first to hit followed by raspberry notes, and woody, chocolate/cinnamon component. Very Nice wine that in the mouth is full of fine and smooth tannins with a nicely balanced acidity. Chocolate, and cherry and the predominant flavors with a slight edge of black pepper at the end. 4/5

100% Tempranillo, aged for 16 months in French and American oak with regular racking and a minimum of 6 months aging prior to release. Dark ruby in color with a dense burgundy core, and thin stringy legs that hug close to each other as they stream down the glass. Extremely aromatic nose showing rich plum, cherry, black pepper and vanilla. In the mouth, the wine shows medium firm fine tannins good acidity and juicy overall mouthfeel. Relatively short but intense red cherry and boysenberry finish that leaves me reeling. 3.5/5

  • 2004 Dinastia Vivanco Rioja Crianza – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja (4/3/2008)
Nice deep red color to this one, garnet. Chocolaty nose with lots of wood, dark raspberry and muted spices. In the mouth, the wine is lush and rich with a softness that is very food friendly. Soft tannins, and a medium acidity frame nice cherry fruit and light pepper notes. Cinnamon and clove come in near the medium length finish. Fully dry, and not a bad middle of the road Rioja. 3/5

  • 2007 Bodegas Valdemar (Martinez Bujanda) Rioja Conde de Valdemar Rosado – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja (4/8/2008)
85% Grenache and 15% Tempranillo Beautiful dark pink rose in color with a clear, transparent rim. Light cranberry dust and cherry aromas drift from the glass under a light citrus film. Subtle and restrained bouquet, almost fragile. In the mouth, the wine shows medium acidity, consistent throughout, light in body and ending with the exact same flavors as I found in the bouquet, sans citrus. Nice, simple, straight forward rose. 3/5

  • 2007 Bodegas Valdemar (Martinez Bujanda) Rioja Conde de Valdemar Rosado – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja (4/8/2008)
Beautiful cherry red color to this wine. The nose is fresh and alive with a pure cherry note, that is framed by light vanilla, simple and clean. In the mouth this wine is fresh and alive with a nice creaminess, and dry finish. Medium acidity balances it well with a vanilla cherry profile that shows hints of anise on the end. Well made, simple and fresh rose. 3/5

  • 2000 Bodegas Valdemar (Martinez Bujanda) Rioja Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja (4/8/2008)
Tempranillo 90% and Mazuelo 10% sourced from their own vineyards in Oyon, Logroño and Ausejo and aged for 25 months in American and French oak. Nice dusty, dark, slightly opaque rose in color with a rich medium cranberry rim. On the nose, the wine shows rich cherry and mint aromas under a current of tanned leather and floral notes. Almost mulled wine, but the bouquet seems a little too vibrant to go that far. Interesting mouthfeel, showing fine, but really firm tannins that makes my mouth cry for moisture. Light in body with medium acidity and almost no detectable flavor on the palate. 2/5

  • 2000 Bodegas Valdemar (Martinez Bujanda) Rioja Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja (4/8/2008)
Dark cherry red with a solid core. Peanut butter is the first smell out of the glass and makes me take a step back! Herbal(mint) cherry mingles with wood and roasted nuts as it opens. Fine and firm tannins mingle with a medium high acidity in the mouth. Fresh vanilla cherry note, though this wine seems all to simple for a gran reserva. Sawdust, and light spice round out the wine, though finish is somewhat sad and dries out quickly. 2.5/5
