Val-de-who do you say? Valdepeñas is a region that makes up a part of the southern tip of Castilla-LaMancha. LaMancha is the biggest DO in Spain, while the DO Valdepeñas is rather average in size comprised of two main areas: Los Llanons meaning “the plains” and Las Aberturas meaning “the mountain passes”. Interestingly, Valdepeñas has for centuries been one of the better wine producing regions in all of Spain. Take its soil, which is similar to LaMancha – rich mineral laden red soil over a shallow bedrock of chalk – and combine it with a slightly less brutal climate than it’s neighbor LaMancha, and you have a recipe for perfection.
As far as the wines in Valdepeñas, Cencibel is king, also known as Tempranillo. So why Cencibel? Well I like to think of it as this, every region feels so sure that they produce the best red wines that they feel the need to call there wine something different from their neighbor.
Crianza: 6 months oak
Reserva: 12 months oak and 24 months bottle
Gran Reserva: 18 months oak and 42 months bottle
In the end, there are small clonal variations from name to name and region to region, but they all are different personas of the great Tempranillo. In Valdepeñas, Tempranillo’s expression tends toward a wine with lighter color and rich flavors. My experience shows that at times these wines can be rich and multi layered, while having an acidity that pairs them perfect with lamb and roast pig. As far as other wines, for whites there is [Aíren->http://twis.info/grape.php?ID=192&select=a] and for rosés there is Cencibel. To a limited extent Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are beginning to be experiemented with.

- 2001 Racimo de Oro Valdepeñas Crianza – Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Valdepeñas (10/3/2005)
Deep rich purple.Toasty oak nose not over powering, with nice cherry, black pepper, plum and faint minerality. Med weight with strong acid(overwhelming) and rich warmth throughout the mouth. Light corkiness makes me think this is going to go downhill with a bit more air….will revisit in 15 minutes. Nose isn’t changing much but the palate is becoming more acrid. Over use of sulfites? Light cork taint? Seems like a nice concentrated wine underneath but not able to come out! UGH….
Side note: The above flaw most likely was in part due to cork taint. Though another component was at work too, most likely either over acidification or over use of sulfites. Not sure which but I do want to reiterate that even if cork isn’t totally to blame, there is no good rational for not bottling 3euro wines like the one above under screwcap. Cork taint is never ok and if you don’t think so imagine having a “cork tainted salad“!

Clear brilliant reddish maroon. Smokey oak with cinnamon, vanilla, strawberry, cherry, and a background herbality. Medium weight with fresh acidity and an overall softness. Fresh raspberry, cherry, light spice(clove?), and soft oak flavors. Really not bad at all, with a short finish, not very concentrated but in this case it makes for a fun refreshing wine.

Nice medium intense purple with light fading at the rim. Cherry cola, vanilla nose with wood and light spice. Really quite a nice nose with a rich cherry quality showing both dried and fresh charecteristics. Rich in the mouth with a high acidity and big fruit. The tannins seem medium in weight with a dry finish that lingers giving way to flavors of charcoal, underbrush and vanilla tinged fruit.

Los Molinos, Tradición, DOC Valdepeñas 12.5%
Non-VintageNice light purple-ish red. Grapey aromas with a background of anise and plum. Med body with little in the way of tannins and a strong acidity. Grapey flavors with some cherry and anise followed by the lightest hints of fresh ground black pepper. Not a bad little wine though nothing to write home about.
