The Undiscovered Sights, Sounds and Flavors of Portugal
written by Gabriella Opaz | 14th December 2017
Just an hour from Lisbon, this one day food and wine tour of the Alentejo will satiate your senses in every way possible. You’ll experience large swatches of land dotted with perfectly round pine trees, and scraggly olive and holm-oak forests, that cast long, obscure shadows. Florescent wildflowers blanket the valleys, large horns from gigantic steers peek over undulating hills, and ancient Dolomite ruins create a majestic setting for a culinary adventure. Savor creamy bread soups seasoned with purslane or cilantro; the infamous Carne do Porco Alentejana stew made with pork and clams served over a bed of potatoes; delicious Alentejano steaks; and secretos de porco made from the famed black footed pig, used in Spain for the glorious jamon de bellota. Sip upon bold, flavorful wines filled with character at a stunning winery nestled in the heart of the region; and finally, enjoy a private walking guided tour through Évora’s historic center. This region is considered one of the most beautiful and breathtaking region’s in Portugal, making it the perfect day trip from Lisbon.
We were part of the 2016 Harvest Tour and had the experience of a lifetime! The Douro Valley is breathtakingly beautiful and our guides were wonderful. Ryan and Gabriella must have called in all of their personal favors because we met and drank wine with many winemakers, a wine shop owner and tasted ’72 port which Oscar Quevedo’s grandfather had made. Doesn’t get any more special than that!
This one day tour explores every aspect of what makes the Alentejo so spectacular. Your private driver will pick you up at the hotel in Lisbon and escort you in a luxury vehicle to the heart of the Alentejo where you’ll enjoy a private tour and tasting at one of the most influential wineries in Portugal. After a mouthwatering tapas lunch with incredible views of the landscape, you’ll head to the historic center of Évora for a private three-hour tour with an expert guide. Surrounded by Medieval walls with ample Roman ruins housed inside, it’s hard not to get swept away by Évora’s natural beauty, history and provincial charm. Located an hour east of Lisbon, it makes for a wonderful day trip to explore Franciscan catacombs, taste local olive oils, sip on fabulous wines and bask in the intense sun while biting into a regional pastry!
